The school, a silver medal recipient, had show how it closed the opportunity gap in a variety of areas:

  • Creating and maintaining a healthy school culture
  • Broadening and enrichening the school curriculum
  • Providing more and better learning time during the school year and summer
  • Ending disparities in learning opportunities created by tracking and ability grouping

In the application process, Elwood emphasized its open enrollment for AP and honors courses and instructional lab classes that give students the opportunity to take an AP or honors course before graduating. The high school also highlighted that it provides students with social-emotional support and offers technological opportunities to teachers and students.

“The high school has tremendous, hard working students with dedicated teachers and administrators who are educational leaders,” Furman said in a statement. ”These components, along with parental support, are the reasons for JGHS being awarded the School of Opportunity Silver Recognition.”
