Northport Looks to End Issuing Misdemeanor Citations to Those Who Violate Building Code

Residents and businesses who violate village building requirements currently face misdemeanor citations.

Northport Village officials soon hope to change the way they fine residents and businesses that make property altercations without the necessary permit.

Officials are proposing to change the village building code to fine violators up to $1,000 per offense instead of issuing misdemeanor citations, Newsday reports.

According to Northport Village building requirements, those who fail to apply for a building permit will be “guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000 or by imprisonment for not more than one year, or by both such fine and imprisonment; and each day such violations shall be permitted to exist shall constitute a separate offense.”

Issuing fines instead of misdemeanor citations would allow village officials to quickly resolve minor violations, according to Newsday.

The issue will be discussed at the next village board meeting.
