St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team on four-game winning streak.

Cross-town rivalry

Cross-town rivals Dominican College and St. Thomas Aquinas College square off again in men’s basketball on Saturday afternoon at Aquinas Gym in Sparkill.

The scheduled 3 p.m. tilt is a rematch of a game on Nov. 19 in the Dominican Tip-Off Tournament, won by the Chargers 71-54.

The Spartans come into the game on a six-game slide, while the Chargers are on a two-game slide after losing at Goldey-Beacom College, 76-74. Despite the setback, Dominican received notable performances from junior forward Cory Quimby of Otisville, with 19 points and 10 rebounds; junior guard Leon Porter of Laurel, MD, with 11 points and 11 assists; and junior forward Dan Woods of Upper Marlboro, MD, with had 12 points and five rebounds coming off the bench.

Dominican, whose roster includes reserve forward Kenneth Brownlee of Nyack, next visits the University of District of Columbia (9-1) on Dec. 30 at 2 p.m.

STAC is hoping to rebound from a 72-60 loss to the powerhouse University of District of Columbia despite a game-high 25 points from Justin Brown and a furious 17-0 second-half run.

Following Saturday’s game, the Spartans take on Pace University on Dec. 30 in Pleasantville at 3:30 p.m.

STAC women on streak

The women’s basketball team at St. Thomas Aquinas College entertains Le Moyne College (1-7) on Saturday at 1 p.m., in a preliminary contest to the men’s game against rival Dominican.

The Lady Spartans (6-3) are on a four-game winning streak after defeating the University of the District of Columbia at Aquinas Hall, 63-52, as senior Briana Sloper of Williston Park posted a game-high 19 points, and 12 rebounds.

Sophomore Briana Cook of Paterson, NJ, added 16 points as UDC (7-1) suffered its first setback of the season in its first-ever East Coast Conference game.

UDC was set to take a lead into halftime before senior Sylvia Davis of St. Albans hit a three-pointer to give STAC the edge at 27-26. The Lady Spartans solidified the advantage after intermission by going on a 15-6 run, and never trailed even as UDC closed to within 44-43 with less than eight minutes remaining.

Davis supplied 11 points and six rebounds coming off the bench.
