Found History: Nyack Yearbook From 1929

Schools' archive grows with new local finds

In a short while, Nyack Schools will —last month, officials asked residents and alums to search their basements and attics for any Indian memorabilia.

So far, so good—a recent addition to the collection is a yearbook from 1929 in great condition.

"At the time, we were known as the Nyack Warriors," said superintendent James Montesano.

Other finds include a ledger for the Nyack Athletic Associaion that dates from 1917 to 1926. Expenses seem almost unrecognizable; $6 covers trips and excursions for entire sports squads.

Another relic found was board minutes from 1858, scrawled into a centuries-old marble notebook that Montesano says is "in pristine condition." Among the notes is a mention of ongoing litigation involving the school board, a reminded of the .

The archive is the result of an $8,335 grant from New York State Education Department’s Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund (NYS Archives Division).

The district put the funds toward hiring a professional archivist through June, who will collect and curate scrapbooks, yearbooks, photos and more from Nyack Schools' past.
