HUDSON VALLEY, NY — There is the potential for severe thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon throughout the region.

The Storm Prediction Center says Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties are at a slight risk for severe weather. The main threats would be from damaging winds and hail.

For Dutchess and Ulster counties, there is a marginal to slight risk for severe thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoon and early evening. The main threat is damaging wind gusts with large hail also possible. In addition, locally heavy downpours may produce minor flooding of low lying, poor drainage and urban areas along with isolated flash flooding.

The cause is a cold front moving through the forecast area on Wednesday. The timing for the lower Hudson Valley is noon to 5 p.m.

State agencies have prepared emergency response assets as storms are expected to produce potentially damaging wind gusts, and localized flash flooding is possible due to the amount of moisture in the ground from recent rains over the past several days.
