Making a Difference Beyond our Community

Living in Rockland County, its common to see people helping others. Whether it is supporting local fundraisers, volunteering or donating to a cause. Many of us believe that when people need help, we should step up.

That belief is a big reason I chose to volunteer with The Borgen Project. Before joining the organization I was aware poverty existed around the world, but I did not fully understand how many children face challenges that most of us rarely think about. Through my work, I learned that more than 250 million children around the world are living in extreme poverty. Many lack access to proper nutrition, healthcare, and early childhood support during the most important years of their development.

What suprised me most was learning that nearly 80% of brain development occurs before a child reaches age three. For millions of children, situations beyond their control can limit opportunities before or if they even begin school. Something as simple as access to nutrition, healthcare, or a safe environment can make a tremendous difference in a child's future.

I also learned about the Global Child Thrive Reauthorization Act, legislation that would help continue efforts to support young children and families by strengthening programs focused on early childhood development. Investing in children during their earliest years can help break cycles of poverty and create opportunities that last a lifetime.

One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering with The Borgen Project has been learning that ordinary people can make a difference. Advocacy does not require holding public office or making large financial contributions. Sometimes it begins with educating yourself, sharing information with others, or contacting elected officials about issues you care about.

The compassion we show in our own communities can also inspire us to care about challenges beyond our borders. By supporting policies that give children a chance to thrive, we can help build a better future for families around the world. Small actions may seem insignificant on their own, but together they can create meaningful change.
