Montesano Encourages Block Scheduling Decision

Nyack High School could adopt new class structure for next year

, a class structure that would have students taking fewer classes each day for longer periods of time, could be decided on as early as next month.

Distict superintendent James Montesano said he will request a decision from school board members at the upcoming April 3 board meeting.

"That's the night I'd like the board to say, 'let's march forward,' or, 'we have reservations,'" Montesano said

The revamp would have students attend core classes for 55 minutes three out of four times on a four-day cycle. On the fifth day, or once-a-week, classes would return to the current nine period, 41 minute schedule.

All students would also share a lunch period—Montesano said so many students with a single free period would be a kink to work out.

Faculty will also visit Suffern High School, which uses a schedule similar to the one Nyack seeks to adopt.

If approved, the new structure would be implemented in the 2012-13 school year.
