Nyack Science Students Enter Competition

Several high school seniors present at regional symposium

Six seniors at Nyack High School presented their scientific research to an eager crowd and panel of judges earlier this month.

The Westchester-Rockland Junior Science and Humanities Symposium hosted Edwin Augustin, Felicia Ryan, Dana Seag, Emily Cea, Sierra Raglin, and Christopher Lazarus of Nyack High.

Each student turned in a 20-page paper on original research, and "were selected from a highly competitive pool of science research students," school officials said.

Five of the six students—Edwin, Felicia, Dana, Emily, and Sierra—were selected from hundreds to discuss their research in front of a panel of judges.

  • Emily Cea - "Sugar Consumption in Adolescents through Beverage Intake"
  • Sierra Raglin - "The Effects of Organic Nutrients on Biological Oxygen Demand in the Hudson River"
  • Felicia Ryan - "Parkinson's Diseased Proteins in Relation to Autophagy"
  • Dana Seag - "The Effects of Time-of-Day and Age on the Cost and Content of the Wandering Mind"
  • Christopher Lazarus - "Does the Power Demand of Personal Computers Depend upon the Activity?"
  • Edwin Augustin was awarded a third place ribbon for his research, entitled "Fourier Series Harmonics from 200 Giga-electronvolt Gold-Gold Collisions," and has been invited to present his research at the Upstate New York Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at SUNY Albany in March.
