📰 News we're reading

1. Two Nyack Men Face Federal Murder Charges in 2023 Pomona Shooting (rocklandnews.com) — Two Nyack men have been indicted on federal murder, robbery, firearms, and narcotics charges in connection with a 2023 fatal shooting at a Pomona apartment complex. Investigators say the case, which left the victim dead after being taken to Nyack Hospital, was tied to a planned drug transaction, and emphasize that all three defendants remain presumed innocent while the case proceeds in federal court.

2. Clarkstown North, Nyack make the top 10 in Oct. 6 girls soccer ranking (lohud.com) — Nyack's girls soccer team has broken into the regional top-10 rankings, highlighted by a big win over previously undefeated Clarkstown South and a strong recent run. The RedHawks, led by standout players including Lily Pade, are now seen as a dangerous contender as Rockland County rivals keep trading wins late in the season.

3. FACT CHECK: 'Mike Lawler's Vote for a Nearly $1 Trillion Medicaid Cut Puts New Yorkers' Coverage at Risk' (dccc.org) — Montefiore Nyack Hospital is flagged among Rockland County facilities considered at risk of cuts, closures, or reduced services tied to a major federal Medicaid funding reduction. The piece sharply criticizes Rep. Mike Lawler's votes for the OBBBA law, outlining how Medicaid and Essential Plan changes could leave thousands of local residents paying more or losing coverage altogether.

4. Obituary: Kefeli, George (wtap.com) — A former Nyack resident who arrived as a teenager in 1949 and graduated from Nyack High School in 1955 is remembered for a long engineering career, global travels, and deep devotion to family. Though he later settled in West Virginia, his story traces a classic immigrant journey that began in Nyack and led to professional success across the country.
