Spring Valley, Monsey Ready For Pre-Passover Ritual

The ritual burning of leavened bread products is overseen by fire departments.

Spring Valley and Monsey are ready for a Jewish ritual that takes place just before Passover. The search for leavened food items — or chametz — will happen Thursday night and families will bring them to annual communal Passover burns Friday morning.

The Spring Valley Hook and Ladder company has seen more than a thousand people come to its fire pit, while the Monsey Fire Department controls the burn in dumpsters, the Journal News said.

Passover celebrates the escape of the Jews from the rule of the pharaoh in Egypt. During the eight days during which it is celebrate only unleavened bread may be eaten.
