The Ossining Public Library’s OPLbery Club has awarded its fourth annual OPLbery Medal to Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, by Chris Grabenstein. They also awarded OPLbery Honors to Rump, by Liesl Shurtliff, and Magic Marks the Spot, by Caroline Carlson.
The 18 members of this mock Newbery Club have been meeting monthly since last April to discuss books that were published during 2013. More than 40 books were on their reading list when they began. In December they narrowed the list down to six, with discussion and voting taking place on January 10.
There were a lot of great books published in 2013, and it was hard to choose which were most distinguished. Medal winner Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library was “absolutely, amazingly, extraordinary,” and “like no other book I ever read,” said one club member. Another said the book was “like a tree—so many branches, and at the end they come together into one big tree.” Rump, an Honor book, was “very unexpected” and “made you have sympathy for Rumpelstiltskin.” Magic Marks the Spot, the other Honor book, was “awesome, amazing, and pretty funny.”
