ICE Arrests 9 In Hudson Valley During NYC Area Sweep

In all 83 people were arrested in the operation that ended Tuesday, immigration enforcement officials said.

Nine Hudson Valley residents were among 83 people arrested during U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's recent sweep in the New York City area.

It was part of a nationwide operation that ended Tuesday after more than 2,000 immigration-related arrests, officials said.

Deportation officers made nine arrests in the Hudson Valley, including in Elmsford, Central Valley, Kingston, Newburgh, Orangeburg, Spring Valley and White Plains. Two had been previously removed from the United States.

“Some criminal aliens may think that just because the nation is fighting the coronavirus, ICE is impaired from carrying out its sworn duty of removing egregious criminals from American communities,” said ICE ERO New York Field Office Director Thomas R. Decker in an announcement about the arrests. “I think the 83 immigration arrests in New York are evidence that that could not be farther from the truth. ICE officers will continue to conduct enforcement removal operations while making every effort to minimize the risk to agency personnel, aliens, and the public during this pandemic.”

People from 25 countries, including Albania, Argentina, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, India, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Russia, Trinidad, and Uzbekistan, were picked up in the sweep.

The criminal histories of those arrested included an assortment of charges, including child abuse, harassment, sexual and aggravated assault, trespassing, weapons violations, robbery, drug charges, and driving while intoxicated, ICE officials said.

ICE says that 85 percent of the people they arrest on immigration charges also have criminal convictions or pending criminal charges. Some have multiple convictions and charges pending.

In the latest sweep, six of the people arrested in the Hudson Valley had been released from custody by local authorities with active ICE detainers, ERO officials said.
