No Date Set for Macancela Deportation: Lawyers

Neighbors Link is pushing back on reports that the 19-year-old will be deported this week.

OSSINING, NY — Neighbors Link, the advocacy organization working with Diego Puma Macancela, is pushing back against reports that the Ossining 19-year-old will be deported as early as Friday.

Neither Neighbors Link nor any others involved can confirm the report, a spokeswoman for Neighbors Link said.

Macancela and his mother Rose were moved out of New York by ICE to separate detention centers in Louisiana. Members of the Ossining community and elected officials have been fighting the deportation order.

Government officials in Ecuador have said the 19-year-old picked up by immigration on the day of his prom had no involvement in gang activity in Ecuador.

A second stay of removal has been filed by his attorneys because the high school senior was trying to flee from those gangs.

ICE had denied the first request to stay his deportation because they said he was involved with gangs.

While no deportation date has been set, the next plane deporting people to Ecuador is June 23, according to the Daily Voice.

Carola Bracco, executive director of Neighbor's Link, told the Daily Voice U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials are still reviewing their second request for a stay.
