Roosevelt School Principal Appointed as New Leader of Ossining High School

Stephen Hancock will take over July 1 for retiring OHS Principal Joshua Mandel.

The Board of Education has appointed Roosevelt School Principal Stephen Hancock as the new principal of Ossining High School.

He takes over for retiring Principal Joshua Mandel, who has led OHS since 1998 and previously served as principal of Roosevelt and Brookside schools. Mr. Hancock will start the new job on July 1.

“I am honored and humbled to be the next principal of our premiere high school,” said Mr. Hancock, who was appointed March 16 after an extensive search. “It is not every day that a lifetime goal and dream comes true. I consider myself fortunate to have been given this opportunity.”

Superintendent Raymond Sanchez said Mr. Hancock has many characteristics that make him a great fit for OHS. “I am confident that Mr. Hancock’s drive, dedication and creativity will have a positive impact on the students and staff at Ossining High School,” he said.

Mr. Hancock has been principal of Roosevelt School since March 2016. “I have enjoyed my time and will miss my Roosevelt School family,” he said. “The students and staff have taught me so much; they have helped me grow as a school leader.”

He has a master’s degree in educational administration and supervision from the Bank Street College Future School Leaders Academy and a master’s degree in literacy education from the College of New Rochelle. He earned his undergraduate degree from St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill.

Mr. Mandel will finish out the school year at OHS. Mr. Hancock thanked the longtime principal for his “exceptional leadership. He is a role model for many of us and his presence will be felt long after his retirement,” he said.

The Ossining School District is conducting a search for a principal to replace Mr. Hancock at Roosevelt School.
