School District to Launch "Ossining Basics" Initiative

The community-wide effort will promote collective action to prepare young children for a successful future.

Parents and other members of the community are invited to the Dec. 5 kick-off event for the new "Ossining Basics" initiative. It is a research-based framework for collective action to prepare children from birth to 3 for a successful future.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the library of Ossining High School, 29 South Highland Ave.

Research has found that 80 percent of brain development happens during a child’s first three years. The five core principals of the framework, which is modeled on the Boston Basics Campaign.are:

  • Maximize love, manage stress;
  • Talk, sing and point;
  • Count, group and compare;
  • Explore through movement and play;
  • Read and discuss stories.

In addition to the school district, many community agencies and government officials are supporting the effort, including the Ossining Police Department, Village Mayor Victoria Gearity, Town Supervisor Dana Levenberg, the Ossining Public Library, Open Door Family Medical Centers, the Ossining Recreation and Parks Department, and local early childhood centers.
