HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Forecasters are all about the impact on travel that a long-lasting winter storm that's now approaching may have on travel. For the Hudson Valley, that's not just holiday travel, but also school and work on Monday. The National Weather Service has issued hazardous weather outlooks for Sunday and Monday.

For Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Northern Westchester:

There is potential for several inches of snowfall during this time period, along with a wintry mix at times, causing significant travel impacts to the Sunday afternoon/evening through Monday night timeframe.

Snow may become a wintry mix for areas south of Interstate 90 Sunday night before transitioning back to snow on Monday. Although the exact snowfall amounts are still uncertain, travel impacts due to snow covered roads and reduced visibility are likely Sunday afternoon into Monday.

For southern Westchester:

A slow moving low pressure system may bring a light snow accumulation to portions of the region Sunday morning into Sunday afternoon. Precipitation is likely to change to all rain Sunday evening into Monday morning, before potentially changing back to snow Monday afternoon into Monday night. This may result in messy travel conditions for the Sunday afternoon/evening and Monday afternoon/evening timeframe.

"As you can see there are a lot of moving parts to this system we need to iron out but there is now a high probability that we will be dealing with a period of winter weather in this timeframe that will have impacts on travel," said Alex Marra and Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather, with an early forecast of up to 1 to 6 inches of snow varying from south to north.

This is the storm that originated in the West and wrought havoc for travelers going to Thanksgiving. Now it'll affect travelers in the East.

"Difficult and dangerous travel is likely to develop from Sunday to Sunday night along much of the New York Thruway, as well as the Massachusetts Turnpike and portions of I-84, 88, 89, 91, 93 and 95. Conditions along these highways will range from wet to slushy to snow-covered," said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist.
