Security Drill at Indian Point Thursday to Include Simulated Gunfire

If you're in that part of Cortlandt in the day or evening of Dec. 11 you might hear the sounds projected by the laser technology.

Entergy will conduct security training drills at Indian Point during parts of the day and evening Dec. 11 using simulated weaponry that sounds like actual gunfire.

During the drills, anyone near the power plants may hear a sound like gunfire as participants carry out simulated attack scenarios that are intended to be as realistic as possible, Entergy officials said.

Local law enforcement agencies have been informed of the events.

Entergy will be using a technical innovation for the exercise known as “MILES” gear or Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement Systems. These systems involve the use of laser “bullets” and vests with laser-detection equipment, which duplicate the effects, including the sound, of live ammunition. MILES gear is used for military and counter-terrorism training across the country to make it as realistic as possible without using real bullets.

Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan is home to two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate approximately 2000 megawatts of electricity for homes, business and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.
