Temple Beth Elohim's Sisterhood Sponsors Origami Workshop

Japanese art of paper sculpting is taught by expert.

's enjoyed a morning of the art of making origami recently.

The class was taught by Maureen Calamo, who is an active member of Origami USA and the Long Island Folding Enthusiasts organizations.

She has taught at private and public events at Stony Brook University's Wang center, the American Museum of Natural History, Origami USA Conventions and at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, which started in the 17th century CE and grew outside of Japan in the mid-1900s. It has since  evolved into a modern art form, where the objective is to transform a flat sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Cuts and glue are not permitted.

The April program was one of many conducted by the Sisterhood at Temple Beth Elohim. The Reform congregation has beenserving the Plainview - Old
Bethpage and surrounding communities since 1955.
