Celebrated music scholarship for Port Jefferson Student

Congrats to Hugo Onghai!

From Port Jeff Schools: Port Jefferson Middle School student Hugo Onghai has received a scholarship for study at the Young Artist Program at SUNY Stony Brook.

The eighth-grader was nominated by his orchestra teacher, Christian Neubert, and was selected for a $500 Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association Joseph R. Herbison Summer Scholarship. Hugo, a cellist in the school’s 7/8 orchestra as well as a pianist, will have the opportunity to broaden his musical horizons by working with other talented young musicians under the guidance of faculty members at Stony Brook University. He was presented with the award at the start of the recent SCMEA Division II concert, for which he was accompanied by Dr. Michael Caravello, director of music and fine arts for the Port Jefferson School District.

“This is a unique opportunity to further understand the foundations of music theory and music literacy,” Caravello said. “We congratulate Hugo on this honor.”
