PORT JEFFERSON, NY — Growing up in a military family brought Liam Cooper to Port Jefferson just last year to continue his studies at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School. Speaking with assistant principal Kevin Bernier, Cooper, a junior, suggested an idea that he wanted to share in his new school community: participating in National Wreaths Across America Day, the Port Jefferson School District stated in a press release.

Bernier put him in touch with Deirdre Filippi, who is the co-adviser of the high school’s Varsity Club, and a thoughtful collaboration was brought to fruition.

To recognize National Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 14, the school’s Varsity Club and Cooper have collaborated on a project to sell wreaths at $15 each, to be a part of wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery and more than 1,600 additional locations across the country.

"It was something that was important to me, and I am excited by the enthusiasm of those I’ve shared it with," Cooper said of the support of his classmates, teachers and people in the Port Jefferson community.

The fundraiser will last until Friday, Dec. 6. Donations can be forwarded to Filippi at dfilippi@portjeffschools.org, or contact her for more information.
