She was driving while her ability was impaired, police say.

CORAM, NY — A Middle Island woman was arrested Thursday in Coram after she drove and got into a crash while her ability was impaired with her two children in the car, Suffolk Police said.

Heather Sload, 40, was driving a 2018 Toyota Camry on westbound Route 25, near Garfield Avenue, when she crashed into a tree around 12:20 p.m., police said. Her son, 8, and daughter, 6, were brought to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said. The children were released to the custody of a family member.

Sload was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while ability impaired with a child passenger 15 years or younger (Leandra’s Law) and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. She will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date. Her car was impounded.
