Driver Indicted In Crash That Killed 2 Roslyn Boys: Court Records

The two Roslyn teenagers were killed by a drunken driver in Jericho in May, officials say.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — The man who authorities said drove the wrong way while drunk and killed two Roslyn teenagers was indicted, according to online court documents. Amandeep Singh, 34, of Roslyn, is set to be arraigned on a 15-count indictment on June 26.

Drew Hassenbein and Ethan Falkowitz, both 14, were killed, and two others injured, when Singh crashed his 2019 Dodge Ram into a 2019 Alfa Romeo with four teenage boys inside on May 3 in Jericho, Nassau police said.

Hassenbein and Falkowitz were Roslyn Middle School students and tennis players.

The two other teens, ages 16 and 17, were taken to a hospital with internal injuries and were listed in stable condition, police said.

Singh, who police said was driving southbound in the northbound lanes on North Broadway at 10:20 p.m., was arrested on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, first-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of an auto accident with a fatality, DWI and two counts of second-degree assault.

Singh was so drunk, he told officers he thought he was in New Jersey, police told Pix 11.

Officials told ABC 7 his blood alcohol level was 0.18 — more than twice the legal limit — at the time of the crash.

"The tragic passing of two of our Roslyn Middle School students is a tremendous loss for their families, friends, and our school community," the Roslyn School District wrote. "The district extends out deepest condolences and asks that everyone respect the families' right to grieve privately during this very difficult time."

Hassenbein and Falkowitz were heading home from a restaurant after a tennis competition when they were hit by Singh, police said, Fox Sports reported. Both boys played on the Roslyn tennis team, and Hassenbein was a nationally ranked tennis player, ranked 38th in the United States for players under 14.

After the initial collision, police said the Alfa Romeo then struck a 2023 Volvo, occupied by a 49-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy.

They were treated at the scene for minor injuries and released, police said.

Fundraisers were set up by the families of Hassenbein and Falkowitz.

The Hassenbein family's fundraiser is kickstarting a planned 5013c nonprofit meant to help underprivileged children find tennis. The GoFundMe has raised more than $321,000 since it was launched.

"Our family is devastated by his loss and is so appreciative of the incredible outpouring of support and people's desire to help," Debbie Hassenbein wrote.

The family hopes to honor Hassenbein's passion for tennis and make a difference in the community.

"Our goal is to expose underprivileged kids to tennis by providing lessons and scholarships to help the next USA Tennis champion reach their dream," Debbie said. "Drew was a former #1 nationally-ranked boys player in the 12s, and with your help, Drew's love of tennis will live on and help develop the next champion. Please help however you can."

The Falkowitz family's fundraiser has raised nearly $324K. The family promised to provide more information on specific organizations they plan to help in Falkowitz's memory.

"Ethan was killed this week when a drunk driver struck the car he was in," the seven organizers of a GoFundMe, including Gary and Lynne Falkowitz, wrote. "Ethan’s entire family is so appreciative of the outpouring of love and support and know many of you have asked how you can help. Ethan cared so much about helping others, so to continue his legacy, we’re starting a GoFundMe to benefit all the causes Ethan cared so much about."
