'Our Family Is Devastated': Fundraiser Made For LI Tennis Star Killed In Crash

The family of Drew Hassenbein is setting up a non-profit to help underprivileged kids find tennis, a sport where Drew was nationally ranked.

ROSLYN, NY — Drew Hassenbein didn't just love tennis — he excelled at it.

Hassenbein, 14, was ranked 38th in the United States for players under 14. The Roslyn Middle School student was killed in a crash by a drunken driver in Jericho on May 3, Nassau police said. Hassenbein was returning from a celebration after a victorious singles tennis match.

Ethan Falkowitz, 14, was also killed after Amandeep Singh, 34, of Roslyn, drove while drunk and crashed his 2019 Dodge Ram into a 2019 Alfa Romeo with four teenage boys inside, police said.

"Even though Drew was a nationally-ranked boys player, nothing meant more to him than being a part of the Roslyn tennis community and being with his friends," wrote Debbie Hassenbein, who organized the GoFundMe.

The fundraiser is kickstarting a planned 5013c nonprofit meant to help underprivileged children find tennis. The GoFundMe has raised more than $158,000 since it was launched on Monday afternoon.

"Our family is devastated by his loss and is so appreciative of the incredible outpouring of support and people's desire to help," Debbie Hassenbein wrote.

The family hopes to honor Hassenbein's passion for tennis and make a difference in the community.

"Our goal is to expose underprivileged kids to tennis by providing lessons and scholarships to help the next USA Tennis champion reach their dream," Debbie said. "Drew was a former #1 nationally-ranked boys player in the 12s, and with your help, Drew's love of tennis will live on and help develop the next champion. Please help however you can."

A GoFundMe was also set up by Falkowitz's family. It has raised more than $200,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.

The Falkowitz family plans to use the funds to help causes that Ethan was passionate about.

The two other teens in the Alfa Romeo, ages 16 and 17, were taken to a hospital with internal injuries and were listed in stable condition, police said.

"The tragic passing of two of our Roslyn Middle School students is a tremendous loss for their families, friends, and our school community," the Roslyn School District wrote. "The district extends out deepest condolences and asks that everyone respect the families' right to grieve privately during this very difficult time."

Singh, who police said was driving southbound in the northbound lanes on North Broadway at 10:20 p.m. May 3, was arrested on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, first-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of an auto accident with a fatality, DWI and two counts of second-degree assault.

Singh was so drunk, he told officers he thought he was in New Jersey, police told Pix 11.

Officials told ABC 7 his blood alcohol level was 0.18 — more than twice the legal limit — at the time of the crash.

Jay Harris, who coached the boys in tennis, told NBC 4 New York the two were "amazing guys" and "best friends" who had been playing the sport since they were 5 years old. They joined the varsity team as eighth graders.
