Local Brothers Hold 300-Mile Bike-a-Thon to Support Animal Rescue Center
The family of a Port Washington resident rescued two dogs and felt inclined to give back to the shelter through an annual bike-a-thon
A local man is raising money for a Huntington animal shelter by biking nearly 300 miles in three days.
Roslyn resident Jonathan Small and his family adopted two rescue dogs, a beagle and a collie mix, from Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center several years ago.
After having these four-legged additions to the family for a few years, Jonathan Small and his brother Michael Small, of Port Washington, decided they wanted to give back to the shelter.

The Small brothers began biking from the Port Washington train station to East Hampton in 2009. The brothers used 100-mile trip to help raise nearly $10,000 for Little Shelter over the past 6 years.
“We’ve followed the same path every year, and it got to be a little monotonous with not seeing anything different,” Jonathan Small told Patch.

That was when they decided to make the trip a little more extreme.
“With an increase in the miles, I was hoping there would be an increase in the number of donations we could raise,” he added.
Small hopes to raise about $2,500 for the 7th Annual Little Shelter Memorial Day Bike-a-Thon. Any donation made to the Memorial Day Bike-a-thon GoFundMe page will go directly towards supporting the Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center.
For the past six years, the Small brothers have biked together. Other bikers have joined their trip in previous years as well. Since Michael Small has a work conflict this year, the bike ride will be a solo journey for Jonathan Small.
“No one has been stupid or crazy enough to ride with me,” he said.
Jonathan Small will embark on his 300-mile trip from East Hills to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, May 26. The trip will take him about three to four days.
He will have his cellphone and camera with him to take pictures as he rides. He also bought a GoPro camera and is looking to use that as well, as long as he figures out how it works.
Anyone interested in joining the ride can contact the shelter for more information.
