Port Washington Police to Crack Down on Drunk Driving for Memorial Day Weekend
Officers will also hold several "safety inspection checkpoints" at various locations throughout Port Washington.

The Port Washington Police District hopes an increase in enforcement will reduce the number of drunk driving accidents during Memorial Day Weekend.
To ensure the safety of their residents, the police will be participating in two safe driving campaigns over Memorial Day Weekend and the month of May.
About 290,000 Americans were injured and 10,076 were killed from drunk driving accidents in 2013, according to police officials.

Port Washington Police are participating in the following campaigns to help reduce these statistics:
- New York’s Holiday Safe & Sober Campaign will run from Friday, May 22 to Monday, May 25.
- Buckle Up New York enforcement campaign will be held from Monday, May 18 to Sunday, May 31.
“Sustained impaired driving enforcement, together with periodic high visibility crackdowns such as the Safe & Sober Campaign, is the key to making our community safer,” said Chief of Police James Salerno.

The Port Washington Police will hold several “safety inspection checkpoints” at various locations throughout Port Washington during the Buckle Up New York campaign.
A person is twice as likely to be killed in a traffic accident if they are not properly buckled up, police said.
The campaign is in conjunction with the CLICK IT OR TICKET national mobilization.
The Safe & Sober Campaign is funded by the Nassau County “STOP DWI” through a grant from the New York State “STOP DWI Coordinators Foundation by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee”.
