Police: Drunk Riverhead Man Arrested After Crashing into Utility Pole in Flanders

The crash caused a fire in the engine compartment and a power outage in the area, police said.

A Riverhead man was arrested after crashing his car into a utility pole while drunk in Flanders on Sunday, according to Southampton Town Police.

Southampton Town Police and Troopers from New York State Police, Troop L Riverside responded to a single car accident on Flanders Road near Huntington Lane in Flanders, police said.

Responding officers found that a 2011 Chevrolet Suburban driving west on Flanders Road collided with a utility pole, police said.

The vehicle continued off the roadway and came to rest in a wooded area. A fire had started in the engine compartment, according to police.

The fire was extinguished by a trooper, while the vehicle operator was removed from the car, police said.

The damage to the pole resulted in a power outage to the general vicinity. PSE&G responded and restored service.

Flanders Fire Department also responded. The roadway was closed for about 30 minutes.

Daniel Hough, 34, Riverhead was the sole occupant of the vehicle, according to police. He was not injured in the collision.

Further investigation revealled that he was intoxicated and he was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, police said.

Hough was processed at Southampton Town Police Headquarters where he was held overnight.

He was arraigned at Southampton Town Justice Court at 9 a.m.

He was released on his own recognizance and is due in court on a future date.
