Police: Shirley Man Hospitalized After Crashing Paraglider on Epcal Property in Calverton

The accident occurred on Sunday.

A Shirley man was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for injuries he sustained after he crashed his powered paraglider on the Epcal property in Calverton on Sunday, according to Riverhead Town Police.

Police responded after a report that a man operating a glider had crashed in a field off of the main runway at the Epcal facility, police said.

Upon police arrival, it was determined that Marcello Iraba, 49, had sustained possible femur fractures to both legs after the glider that he was flying had crashed shortly after taking off from the southeastern most runway at the Epcal facility, according to police.

He was airlifted to Stony Brook by Suffolk Police helicopter for treatment of his injuries, police said.

The Riverhead Town Police Detective Division, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), responded to assist in the investigation, police said.

No criminal charges have been filed at this time, although the investigation is ongoing.
