Rye Neck $35.5M Bond Vote Fails to Pass

The district had had wanted to add classrooms and make improvement to the the middle/high school gymnasium.

RYE NECK, NY — A $35.5 million construction bond vote in the Rye Neck School District failed at the polls Thursday.

The vote tally was 380 against passage and 363 for —a shortfall of 17 votes, according to the superintendent’s office.

A message on the district’s website said that the Board of Education and administration were disappointed in the bond’s defeat.

“Our research concluded that basic infrastructure needs, growing enrollment of our district and commitment to contemporary instructional environments demanded a comprehensive facilities approach,” the message read. “However, we respect our community’s reaction of the project, and will consider other options to meet these challenges in the coming months.”

Among the projects the district had proposed were two new classrooms at Daniel Warren, four new instructional spaces at F.E. Bellows, upgrades to the gymnasium and eight additional science classrooms at the Middle/High School.
