Rye Resident Wins Volunteer New York! Going Green Award

Rye volunteer wins Volunteer New York!'s Going Green Award

A Saturday trip to the Cornell Cooperative to pick up some plants for his second home in Sullivan County, took an interesting turn when Henry King, of Rye, decided to stay and attend a seminar on bees. The door prize for attending the seminar was a package of 10,000 newly installed bees complete with a queen bee. Little did King know, that Saturday afternoon became the first time he ever won anything. His philosophy of caring for living things guided him as he read and learned all that he could about bees, their habits and their habitats. His studies eventually led him to the City of Rye naturalist, Chantel Deftels, and the Rye Nature Center.

After 20 years of service and becoming an expert on bees, King is being honored at Volunteer New York!’s 37th Annual Volunteer Spirit Awards breakfast benefit. The event will take place Friday, March 31, 2017 at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, NY from 8-10:00am.
