Girls named division champs for first time in more than a decade.

The Bayport-Blue Point varsity girls claimed its first Division IV title since 2000 on Tuesday, also finishing fifth overall in Suffolk County in the 5000 meter event.

Led by Katie Saroka (19:43) and Courtney Dooley (21:05), with strong performances by Brianna Delzell (21:34), Shannon O'Hara (21:41) and Taylor Darby (22:01), the Phantoms delivered another stellar performance at Sunken Meadow.

Girls cross-country coach Vin Ungaro said the team demonstrated a significant improvement from last season.

"I could not be more proud of the whole team," he said. "It's a true testament to the character of the team that the improvement from last year was not random, but the whole team became faster and stronger, both mentally and physically."

The coach said the JV girls also rose to the occasion and took fifth (out of 25) in the county as well. Individual results were Skyler Pollak (23:00), Emma Suhr (23:16), Noreen McAllister (23:38), Rachel Steinmuller (23:43) and Courtney Bofinger (23:51).Β
