My mother had the most beautiful calla lilies on her wedding day in 1938. It became the family's favorite flower because we saw the photos. How could you not love that bouquet? The flowers were white, large and beautiful, and so perfect for a bride. When I got married, I requested calla lilies from my florist, only to be told that they were not in season and would wilt too quickly. "It is not a good flower for a bridal bouquet," he said. I gave in the the florist's recommendations and regretted my decision.Â
When my mother was 88 years old and dying of cancer, she stayed with us with the assistance of Hospice care. The first day she joined us in our home, I bought calla lilies to welcome her. She loved the gesture and it made her smile. The fact is, the fresh-cut calla lilies were expensive and they did not last very long. It really didn't matter this time. I bought calla lilies anyway.Â
