Pair Stole Holiday Tips Intended for Sanitation Workers: Police

Two men arrested following theft in Bohemia Tuesday, police say.

BOHEMIA, NY - Two men were arrested for allegedly stealing tips intended for sanitation workers in Bohemia on Tuesday.

According to police, Fifth Precinct patrol officers responded to Louis Kossuth Avenue around 10:15 a.m. after a 911 caller reported that they observed two men taking an envelope containing money that was on top of a garbage can.

Officers Katherine Willox and Daniel Hogan responded and located a vehicle matching a description provided by the caller and arrested the occupants, police said.

Michael Heafy, 50, of Patchogue, and Christopher Schmidt, 44, of Selden, are each charged with four counts of petty larceny.

The investigation is continuing and Fifth Precinct Crime Section officers are investigating if Heafy and Schmidt are responsible for other similar incidents, police said.
