Sayville Superintendent Walter Schartner Announces His Retirement

After 44 years in education—39 f which have been in Sayville—Superintendent Walter Schartner has announced he will be retiring at the end of the 2016-17 school year.

Schartner delivered his news during the first Superintendent’s Conference Day held on the day that officially opens the new school year for returning staff.

During his welcome back address, Schartner first expressed his excitement about many positive initiatives expected to enhance the education of Sayville’s students within the upcoming school year. After listing the highlights, Schartner transitioned to the next important announcement.

“This is my thirty-ninth opening of a school year in Sayville," he said. "I feel it important to inform you that it will be my last. I informed the Board of Education last week that I intend to retire at the end of this school year.

"I have been blessed to work with the extraordinary team of people that are the Sayville Board of Education, faculty and staff. The support of the community has been humbling over the thirty-nine years, allowing me the opportunity to help educate their children. Our alumni not only return toSayville but they are very successful adults. Over my tenure in Sayville, I have been teacher, coach, summer school principal, dean, assistant principal, principal, and now superintendent. In every position I have been rewarded with exceptional colleagues, dedicated students, and supportive families. I will leave knowing that the excellence that is Sayville Public Schools is bigger than any one person and shall persevere and grow.

As we move into the 2016 – 2017 school year, I thank you for your continued professionalism and dedication to the students of Sayville Public Schools.”

As a sign of respect and appreciation for all his service, dedication, and years of commitment, the entire assembly, comprised of district administrators, teachers, and staff, rose to their feet and gave Schartner a lengthy standing ovation.
