Accompsett Middle School Shows It's Cool to Be Kind

Students take part in "Cool to Be Kind" week.

Students at Smithtown’s Accompsett Middle School recently observed “Cool to Be Kind” week with activities to encourage and celebrate acts of kindness. The school’s Character Education and Wellness Committee organized the annual program.

The week began with a visit from author and motivational speaker Tom Thelen, who shared his anti-bullying message, providing students with concrete strategies to prevent bullying and cyberbullying. Later in the week, students wrote appreciation cards to faculty and staff and thank-you letters to local veterans.

In turn, teachers wrote water drop-shaped notes documenting random acts of kindness performed by students since the start of the school year. They presented these “drops” to the students, who posted them on a large “fill your bucket” bulletin board displayed in the school cafeteria. Since last year, more than 100 students have been recognized for engaging in acts of kindness.
