Man Killed After Accident With Town Street Sweeper: Police

The couple lost visibility due to a cloud of dust caused by the street sweeper, police said; a second accident followed.

SPEONK, NY - A Speonk man was killed after he and his wife were involved in a car accident involving a Southampton Town street sweeper, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, the accident took place on Thursday at 10:21 a.m. when the couple was heading north on Speonk Riverhead Road, just south of Sunrise Highway.

The couple lost visibility in a cloud of dust caused by the Southampton Town Street Sweeper cleaning sand off the roadway, police said.

The driver, Grace Larson, 72, who was driving a 2008 Hyundai, was unable to see through the dust and hit the rear of the sweeper in front of her, police said.

Her husband, Larry Larson, 72, was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later, police said.

Grace Larson was transported to Brookhaven Hospital for minor injuries, police said.

A second accident was reported when a BMW traveling behind the Hyundai was unable to see the crash due to the dust and drove through the crash rubble; the driver was uninjured, police said.

The New York State Police Motor carrier responded to the scene for a safety check of the sweeper, police said. No criminality was involved in the accident, police said.
