Young Man Found With Marijuana, BB Gun in Car: Police

SOUTHAMPTON, NY - A young man was caught with marijuana and a BB gun in Riverside Thursday, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, members of the Community Response Unit were patrolling at 9:27 a.m. in Riverside and came upon a vehicle with dark, tinted windows at Old Quogue Road and Riverleigh Avenue.

The officer stopped the vehicle due to the window tint violation and, upon approaching the vehicle, noticed the driver reaching toward the passenger side of the vehicle, police said.

The officer interviewed the driver and saw a marijuana cigarette in plain view, police said.

The officer then questioned the driver, Richardo Diaz, 18, of Yaphank, who admitted to having an additional quantity of marijuana in the vehicle, police said.

The officer retrieved a container of marijuana along with a black BB gun, "which could have easily" been mistaken for a 9 mm handgun, police said.

Diaz was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, and criiminal possession of marijuana in the fifth degree, a misdemeanor, police said.

Diaz was processed at Southampton Town Police headquarters and arraigned at Southampton Town Justice Court the same day, police said.
