During the standoff, Bateman came out of the front door, holding a revolver and wearing a bulletproof vest, police said. A negotiator phoned and tried to get him to come out without a weapon, but was unsuccessful.

A short time later, a remote-controlled probe was sent inside, and it found Bateman’s body.

Police found two loaded revolvers and several spent bullet casings in the house. They also found three pet dogs, unharmed; arrangements have been made for their care.

Bateman was pronounced dead at the scene; the Putnam County Coroner’s Office has ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
