With heat indices into the 100s over the next couple of days, the Putnam County Department of Health urges residents to take precautions to protect themselves from heat-related problems such as heatstroke and heat exhaustion.

Staying cool and well-hydrated are two main tips to remaining safe and healthy during a heatwave, health officials said, adding that public spaces with air conditioning can offer a break from the high temperatures.

The Mahopac Library at 668 Route Six in Mahopac, and the Kent Town Hall at 25 Sybil’s Crossing in Kent Lakes, both offer indoor space for residents to cool off. The library has confirmed they remain open now. Residents are encouraged to call both locations ahead or go online to check hours and for any last-minute changes. The library telephone number is 845-628-2009. A Kent Town Hall representative has confirmed their best phone number is 845-225-3943, and provided an alternate number of 845-225-2067.
