Back to School 2011: Students' Advice to this Year's Freshmen Residents

Get your bikes and fans, its time for dorm living!

For the freshmen dormers at Stony Brook University, dorm living is an all new experience, and some of the vets of the dorms have key advice for you.

Nivin Thundiyil, a senior, has a list of things to expect and a set of guidelines to help you become accommodated to life at Stony Brook.

“Get a bike if possible, expect a lot of noises [from neighboring rooms], go to class all the time, and get into football,” said Thundiyil. The Stony Brook Seawolves football team takes on Lafeyette at the big Homecoming game on Sept. 24.

“I wish I didn’t bring my whole life with me,” said Colby Allen. Many other residents of the Roth Quad agreed.

“Don’t live in Whitman – there’s bugs and raccoons!” said Eric Golden, a senior. Whitman College is in the Roth Quad, but Golden now has no complaints about rodents. He lives in the new building on campus.

Kristin Abrams, a senior, wishes the RAs (Resident Assistants) were more helpful.

“If you want something done you really have to make a scene,” said Abrams. She also suggests bringing a lot of fans. “There is barely any air conditioning!”
