Starbucks Kitchen Fire Breaks Out In Stony Brook University Library: Officials

The building was evacuated as firefighters got the flames under control, officials said.

STONY BROOK, NY — A fire broke out inside of a Starbucks at the Melville Library of Stony Brook University on Friday morning, according to Larry Zacarese, vice president for enterprise risk management and chief security officer at the university.

The fire began in a piece of kitchen equipment at around 10:45 a.m., prompting the evacuation of the building, Zacarese said.

It drew emergency service personnel, including those from campus, as well as from multiple fire departments, according to officials.

The fire was brought under control and further investigation is ongoing, he said.

Officials are assessing the extent of the damage, a spokeswoman said.

She could not say how any people were in the building when it was evacuated.

No injuries were reported.

Zacarese said officials are asking people on campus to avoid the scene while personnel continues to investigate.

The library will be closed for the remainder of the day.

A Starbucks spokeswoman said the location is licensed to the university.

Starbucks officials "are grateful that no customers or green apron partners (employees) were harmed by the fire, and for the quick action of first responders," she said.

"We encourage customers to check Starbucks.com or the Starbucks app for updates on store operating hours."
