UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A new community-driven mural has made its debut at Lincoln Center, marking the start of a major transformation on the campus’s west side.

Titled "The Future We Create," the mural was unveiled on Monday along Amsterdam Avenue and West 62nd Street, where it wraps around construction fencing at Damrosch Park.

The installation coincides with the launch of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Lincoln Center West Initiative, a long-term project aimed at opening up the campus and creating new public spaces.

The $335 million project will add a 2,000-seat outdoor performance venue, a park with an interactive water feature, and remove an obstructive wall along Amsterdam Avenue, among other changes, Lincoln Center officials said.

The renovation aims to make the iconic campus, which already houses 11 venues spanning music, dance, opera, film, and theater, more accessible, modern and welcoming, Lincoln Center officials said.

Designed by artist Vanesa Álvarez and assistant artist Derval Fairweather in partnership with ArtBridge, the mural was shaped through workshops and conversations with local residents, NYCHA neighbors and students.

"I’m so thrilled to unveil The Future We Create,” Álvarez said. "This is more than a piece of art—it’s a story. Behind this mural is a history of community: of joy, of color, of people spending time together, creating together, believing in the arts, and being part of making it."

The mural arrives as construction begins this spring on the broader campus overhaul, which will remove barriers along Amsterdam Avenue, add new entrances and green spaces, and create an outdoor performance venue.

The project is expected to be completed in 2028, with plans for free performances and expanded public access.

said the mural reflects the spirit of the surrounding neighborhood and the institution’s future direction.

"This mural reflects the joy and pride of New Yorkers and, in particular, of our immediate neighbors," Lincoln Center President and CEO Mariko Silver said. "Together, we’re re-imagining what this campus can be and how we will weave the arts into everyday life. We’re grateful to everyone who contributed to this design and look forward to embarking on this next phase together."
