📰 News we're reading

1. Long Island Native American mascot dispute is revived on appeal (blogspot.com) — A Wantagh Board of Education member has revived a federal First Amendment challenge to New York State's crackdown on Native American school mascots, including the Warriors name and imagery. An appeals court ordered further review of whether he, as an elected official and volunteer, can be barred from wearing Warriors apparel at school events, a decision that could affect how Wantagh residents see and use their team identity.

2. High school roundup: Girls volleyball, boys and girls soccer and field hockey (newsday.com) — Wantagh girls soccer edged Floral Park 1–0, with goalkeeper Lena Tuniewicz making five saves and Emma Bianculli scoring the lone goal off a Heather Udell assist in Nassau A/B-I play. The roundup also highlights other Long Island volleyball, soccer, and field hockey results, but Wantagh's solid 4-2-2 record stands out for local fans.

3. Cop who tackled Gracie Mansion 'bomber' among heroes honored at PBA's 'Finest of the Finest' (newsbreak.com) — An NYPD officer was honored after rescuing two people from a burning, overturned car at a major Wantagh intersection back in February, rushing in off-duty while undergoing cancer treatment. His award came alongside other NYPD heroes recognized at the PBA's "Finest of the Finest" ceremony, underscoring how quick action and basic tools helped save lives on a familiar Wantagh roadway.

4. Long Island Bridge Honors Trooper James M. MacLarnon (uticaphoenix.net) — Drivers using the Wantagh State Parkway now cross a bridge newly dedicated to State Trooper James M. MacLarnon, honoring his line-of-duty death in 1931. State Police and local lawmakers gathered October 2 to rename the span over the Southern State Parkway, creating a permanent reminder of his service for Long Island motorists, including Wantagh-area commuters.
