Center for Creative Retirement-Week of September 30

The Center for Creative Retirement (CCR) began its 33rd year on Monday September 9. Retirees seeking an intellectual challenge and social engagement will find in the program just what they are seeking.

CCR meets Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays in the LIU Building on the campus of Suffolk Community College in Riverhead.

Each day brings a fresh perspective on some topic that members have chosen as part of the syllabus. CCR volunteers research and present the topics. As a member, you can look forward to a rich tapestry of new facts and perspectives.

From 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, September 30, learn about and discuss historian Barbara Tuchman’s 1956 chronicle, "The Bible and the Sword," of Britain’s long relationship with pre-Israel Palestine and the Middle East, from the ancient world to the twentieth century.

On Tuesday October 1, we spend the morning on Irish history and culture.  Hear a native of the “Old Sod” talk about how the Irish strived to secure the Free State.  A change of pace at noon—enjoy one hour reminiscing about “the king of rock-and-roll,” Elvis Presley.  Learn about his life and hear his music.

Thursday morning brings us back to the late 1940s—the Berlin Airlift—one of the U.S.A.’s finest efforts.  Hear about how we broke the Soviet Union’s blockade of the city.  The afternoon session concludes the day with the “Advertising Executives and Their Creativity.”  The lecture is part of CCR’s course “Advertising and Consumerism in the USA.”

CCR classes are held in the LIU Building on the campus of Suffolk Community College, 121 Speonk-Riverhead Road, Riverhead, NY. Our web site: http://www.liu.edu/Riverhead/CE/CCR/About.
