YORKTOWN, NY — Beaches and some pools opened Memorial Day weekend but by no means have all the needed lifeguards been hired. So if you're looking for summer employment, this is an area with potential.

For example, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is hiring more than 1,000 new and returning lifeguards for the summer season at its swimming beaches and pools.

"Lifeguarding is a rewarding way to earn money, gain valuable job experience and serve the public in a friendly, active and fun environment," said Acting State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid.
