One Book, One School Kicks Off at Lakeland Copper Beech MS

Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School students and staff kicked off the One Book One School project on Monday, January 4th. Students were greeted by a “red carpet” as they entered the school. They were also greeted by a life-size copy of the book in the school lobby.

The student’s school day then began with simultaneous assemblies held in the school’s library, two gyms and two cafeterias. Students were introduced to the book selection, “The City of Ember,” followed by special guest readers reading from the book’s introduction.

The project will celebrate literacy and foster a sense of community throughout the middle school. The goals of the program are to enhance a love of literature and literacy for our students to benefit all disciplines and encourage this important life-long skill. Each student and staff member received a copy of the book, which they will read independently during the month of January.

Students will also be encouraged to read at school when the time is available. Throughout this two-week event, there will be daily trivia, Dine and Book Talk lunches, and access to quiet reading rooms during lunch periods.

“We look forward to opportunities to discuss the book with peers, teachers and administrators as we continue to build our culture and community,” said Dr. Theresa Wilkowski, District Director of Curriculum-ELA.
