Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- A second attempted child abduction has been reported in Wake County. Root Elementary School principal Blaine Clark sent a message to families letting them know there was an incident that occurred while a student was walking home from school. The suspect was in his 30s driving a dirty, gray sedan that the student described as a Honda. Chief of Police Estella Patterson addressed the incidents saying, "It is important to me as chief, if there is any activity that puts our young people in danger that we're on it immediately." (WRAL, CBS17) Patterson also took the time to lay out her 100-day plan for Raleigh. (abc11)
- Two raccoons tested positively for rabies after encounters with dogs locally. On September 15 a raccoon was killed by a dog, and on September 29 a raccoon was captured after acting abnormally with a dog. In both incidents the dogs were up to date on their vaccines, but Wake County has issued tips to minimize rabies risks. (abc11)
- More scams are popping up, taking advantage of those who are trying to find a home in Raleigh's competitive market. Marthie Irby found this out firsthand after wire transferring $95,000 in closing costs, only to discover that her communication was not with her closing attorney. Millions of dollars a month are being lost to this scam, and cybersecurity expert Dr. Eric Cole says that you should not trust email communication, as scammers are compromising the closing company's servers. (WNCT9)
- Raleigh police are asking for public help identifying a woman who broke into two cars and tried cashing a stolen check. The break-ins happened on September 15 and the next day the suspect was caught on surveillance trying to cash a check that was taken from one of the vehicles. The suspect is pictured in a blonde wig, driving an SUV. Any information leading to the capture of the suspect sent to CrimeStoppers will receive a cash reward. (CBS17)
- Raleigh Radiology has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The recognition of excellence distinguishes those that have earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound. (The Mountaineer)
