Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. On Thursday, Raleigh city leaders shared nine concepts that could improve the Five Points Intersection. The intersection that combines Glenwood Avenue, Fairview Road, Glenn Avenue, and West Whitaker Mill Road has a long history of crashes. The proposed concepts include adjusting the flow of traffic, converting streets to one-ways, creating a roundabout and more. The city is conducting a survey that closes on October 31 to identify safety and streetscape improvements in the Five Points community. (WRAL)
  2. On Tuesday, a state appeals court ruled that the breach of contract lawsuits against NCSU and UNC can continue. Students have initiated a lawsuit after fall 2020 fees for campus-based services were collected, even though they were unable to use the services due to the COVID pandemic. The decision of the state appellate court upheld the superior court decision. The students have requested the complaints move forward as a class-action lawsuit that would allow other students to recover fess paid during the fall of 2020 semester. (WRAL)
  3. Duke Energy Progress has filed a NC rate increase proposal that would cost residential customers 18.7% more by 2025. The proposal would increase the retail sales net revenues by $615 million, with 75% of spending in the next three years to go to grid infrastructure improvements. With the proposal, they would also create a program for low-income customers to reduce their bills by $42 a month, and energy efficiency programs to help generate savings. (abc11)
  4. Galatians Community Health is working to combat obstacles that uninsured pregnant mothers face in Wake County. Wanett Mims co-founded the organization after witnessing patients who were denied or limited access to healthcare. This year, she opened Galatians Community Health, a nonprofit that provides primary care, pediatric and OBGYN services. The barriers disproportionately impact women of color, as Black moms and babies die at higher rates than others. Wake County reported a higher than average Black infant mortality rate in 2020, and Mims is hoping to help close the gap, as they have already been able to serve nearly 300 Black mothers. (abc11)
  5. A man was transported to the hospital after suffering multiple stab wounds at a bus stop. The incident took place near the Walmart on Fayetteville Road. Garner police are investigating the matter. Two juvenile suspects were taken into custody and the victim has been confirmed to be a man in his 60s. Initial investigations treated the incident as an armed robbery, but investigators now believe that an argument led to the assault. (CBS17, FOX8)

From my notebook:

  • It's National Pierogi Day and I'm so excited to celebrate it! Pierogis will always elicit memories of visiting my great grandmother's house as she would always fry up a batch. Sadly my great grandmother is no longer with us, but whenever I need a taste of grandma's house (and am feeling lazy), I hunt down Pop Pop's Pierogies.
  • If you're new in town, The City of Raleigh has updated their information for new residents page.
  • If you or someone you love is pursuing a higher education, The College Foundation of North Carolina has free information to help you navigate the process.
  • The North Carolina Society of Hispanic Professors has been awarded the October Triangle NC Cares Award. (abc11)
  • On Wednesday, the IRS announced that anyone in North Carolina who had a valid extension to file their 2021 return by October 17, will now have until February 15, 2023. (abc11)

That's it for today! I'll catch up with you bright and early tomorrow with another update.
