Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Candidate filing for the November 8 elections closed on Friday afternoon. Election records now show Raleigh residents who will be running for mayor and city council seats. Incumbent Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin filed for re-election, and will face challengers DaQuanta Copeland ant Terrance 'Truth' Ruth. Two at-large council member positions will also be on the ballot, with only incumbent Jonathon Melton seeking re-election, as Nicole Stewart is opting not to. All districts have multiple candidates contending for the seats as well. (CBS17, WRAL)
  2. Police are warning North Carolina State University students to be on guard after one student was victim to an attempted armed robbery on Saturday morning at Pullen Park. The safety notice was issued around 12:00pm according to NCSU Police's Facebook page. According to police, the suspect demanded money from the student while holding a blunt object to their back around 6:30am. It is unclear how they got away, but the suspect fled on foot toward Ashe Avenue. (WRAL)
  3. Friday storms brought flooded streets, mudslides, and house fires throughout Wake County. Several lightning fires left families displaced, and other homes were damaged due to falling tree limbs. Typical areas also experienced flood waters, with one woman reporting water that was nearly up to the hood of her car. (CBS17, WRAL)
  4. Bussin Pizza has opened on Hillsborough Street where the Subconscious was formerly located. Owner Saul Castillo says that while others are struggling to hire staff, he has found the secret to obtaining and retaining good workers. Saul is paying his employees at least $20 an hour. Saul says that with the good location, he sees himself there for 40 years. (abc11)
  5. The new emergency "988" hotline has been activated for North Carolina. The new number replaces the existing mental health hotline to help those in need of service. The new hotline number has become the new number across the country for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Experts believe that the simple number will be easier to remember and could be a determining factor between life and death for someone. (CBS17)

  • It's National Tattoo Day and The 1st Annual Raleigh Tattoo Arts Festival is happening this week at the NC State Fairgrounds.
  • As of July 15, LM Restaurants have raised $64,000 of their $100,000 goal to support Ukrainian refugees in the month of July. (abc11)
  • A family is grateful after a missing wedding ring belonging to Ryan Monnier's deceased mother was returned to them by Raleigh police. (CBS17)
