Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Wake County parents are advocating for students to stay home on Election Day. The Wake County Public School System shares 75% of its buildings with voters on election days and parents who started the "Safe School Polling" initiative are concerned that election days give people easier access to school buildings and students. At some schools, voters share an entrance and hallways with students, and the November 8 election will likely see 100,000 constituents. (WRAL)
- North Carolina law enforcement agencies are conducting a speed enforcement campaign from July 18-24. The campaign is part of a national initiative with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to Mark Ezzell, the director of the Governor's Highway Safety Program, speeding-related crashes are on the rise. Last year in North Carolina, 424 people died in North Carolina speeding-related crashes. (CBS17)
- RDU Airport has ranked among the worst U.S. airports for cancellations and delays this summer. There have been more than 100,000 flight cancellations this year and RDU ranks number 4 in the nation for flight cancellations. An RDU spokesperson notes that 62% of the airport's flights are to other airports on the list. Blame for the cancellations can be placed on several different sources, as airlines and air traffic control facilities are short staffed. (WRAL)
- The owner of a missing detailing trailer is celebrating after being reunited with it on Sunday. Phillip Exum, a maintenance supervisor at The Villages at McCullers Walk Apartments notified Daniel Hayes. Exum saw the trailer parked at the apartment community on Friday and was about to tag it to be towed, until he saw the story. According to Hayes, the trailer had minor damage, and nearly everything inside was stolen, but he was happy to have the trailer back. (abc11)
- Many businesses return to office space throughout the Triangle. Although the move back has been slow, companies are reevaluating existing building spaces. Raleigh-Durham is working to develop spaces that entice workers back to offices and encourage existing businesses to expand in the post-pandemic environment. (Rebusiness Online)
