1. Second gas leak in less than a month prompts call for safe digging (wwaytv3.com) — A construction crew hit a natural gas line on Castle Hayne Road in Wilmington Thursday, triggering an emergency response and briefly disrupting nearby businesses. With this being the second local gas leak in under a month, Piedmont Natural Gas is urging everyone—from contractors to homeowners—to call 811 three business days before digging so crews can safely mark underground lines.
   

2. Rescue kitten takes first steps using Lego wheelchair (kptv.com) — In Wilmington, a Bricks & Minifigs employee used his Lego skills to build a custom wheelchair for Rex, a rescue kitten with a neurological condition who had never walked. Local volunteers say the low-cost device is transforming Rex's rehabilitation and giving them new hope, and the cat is expected to be listed for adoption through Rescue Connect once he's ready.
   

3. Study ranks North Carolina among worst states for mental health care access (wwaytv3.com) — New data out of Wilmington highlights that North Carolina ranked among the worst states for mental health access in 2025, but New Hanover County fares better than many neighbors. The study shows shorter travel distances and more facilities here than in Brunswick and Columbus counties, underscoring how uneven access is across our region and why many residents still face long drives for care.
   

4. WAVE discusses next steps for adding bus stop amenities after the removal of DSA benches (whqr.org) — Wilmington's WAVE Transit is moving ahead with installing 19 new shelters and 19 benches after removing unofficial Democratic Socialists of America benches from local bus stops. Officials are weighing an updated Adopt-An-Amenity program, engineering requirements, costs around $5,000 per bench, and how community groups might still help improve conditions for riders.
